Zaphyra, a solo female ensemble, was formed in 2007 by Founder and Artistic Director of Voices, Maria Pia Ugarte. While working on the mixing of the recording of the 2006 Voices concert, Ms. Ugarte was drawn to a particular song, "Sale ascende." The combination of the these voices is what inspired the creation of the group. Members currently include Jill Safko, Paige McCauley, and most recently Amy Beacham. The solo ensemble performs a vast array of music, which ranges from standards to musicals and opera.
Zaphyra is based in Georgia and performed in the 2007 Voices concert, "Canto ad una Terra, Song to One World" on September 8 and 15, 2007 and the Star Spangled Banner at Main Street's "God and the Country" on September 9, 2007 at The Villages Amphitheater in Fayetteville.
Zaphyra joined Voices again in 2008. They offered a preview of the opening Voices concert at the Powers' Crossroads Festival in Newnan and performed at the Buchanan Benefit on October 11, 2008. Zaphyra also joined the City of Newnan during their Christmas celebrations in December of the same year and is currently preparing for Christmas 2009. Multiple presentations followed in 2010. Zaphyra then started work on their first album which they are currently recording.
